#TBT How a Brooklyn H.S. Basketball Star Scored My Number in the Cutest Way Possible
Following P, I met a handsome young man, who we'll call B. B was a basketball player, who was one of the star players at Transit Tech Career and Technical High School during the 2006-2007 school year. When we met, I was a sales associate at American Eagle. Due to a fire at the SoHo location, I was transferred to the Brooklyn location in Kings Plaza Mall. Little did I know I would meet my next boyfriend.
I can’t remember what season it was, but I remember it being close to closing hours. I was in the middle of organizing the brand's Aerie line, when two young men were scoping the brand’s sunglass collection. As I walked towards the register, which was adjacent to the cash register, B and I locked eyes. He asked for my “expert opinion.” Here was this fine young man, a butter pecan hue, who stood tall at 6 feet 4 inches. He purchased a pair of sunglasses. We flirted as I completed his purchase. B complemented my purple glasses. The way his friend, who I later learned was his best friend, laughed and how fidgety B was, I assumed there had to be some prior conversation. Before he turned to walk away, B gathered enough confidence and told me to write my number down on the back of his receipt.
Later that night, B called and we talked all night long. I learned it was his friend who wanted to check out the new collection at American Eagle. Both had no intention of purchasing anything from the store. However, once they walked in and B spotted me and he knew he wanted to get to know me better. Both agreed the best way to get my attention—and number—was to purchase a product, as I was the only cashier on duty. Eventually B became my boyfriend and later revealed he was actually broke the day we met. He was determined to get my number so he borrowed money from his friend to purchase the sunglasses.
As a teenager, this was by far the cutest encounter I had with a stranger. So what was so cute about this unexpected meeting?
His Body Language: Prior to B’s purchase, I found him staring at me only for him to quickly avert his gaze once he realized I was staring back. We were basically having eye sex, you know the act of two people staring at each other in such a lustful way they might as well be doing it. Also, I’ve read when a man is flustered and there is an intense attraction, you’ll see his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down from all the physical anxiety and nervousness. I easily remember B’s Adam’s apply going up and down.
Everything Was Erect: Hold on now. I am not talking about his you know what so get your mind out the gutter. I am referring to the way he stood tall. His muscles pulled tight, which showed off his body to his best advantage. And let me say, he was quite muscular, as most basketball players are.
The Smile: As I completed the transition, B for no real reason (nobody said anything funny) continued to flash his pearly whites. Just like a yawn is contagious, so is a smile. Every moment I paused to look up, he smiled, which in turn made me smile. Trust me when I say I took my time with this sale. One because I didn’t want to F up the transaction, two because I was so distracted.
Last but not least, the way he asked for my number: By the time B and I met I was 17. In the two years of me working at American Eagle I have never given my number out at work. But it was something about this butterscotch honey that made me feel okay to do so. Plus as corny as it sounds, I thought writing my number down on the receipt was absolutely adorable. Like movie worthy (I know, I know I am absolutely a cornball).
B and I will go on to be together for a year and a half and I would learn a few very valuable life lessons. Stay tuned....
*Oh if you're wondering what happens to P, after leaving his ass high and dry in the city eventually I went ghost ( you know when someone you’re dating ends the relationship by cutting off all communication). However, it wouldn't be the last of P and I. *
