In the entertainment realm proclaiming the word of God can be challenging. Though gospel singers have found a way to reach the masses with a more contemporary approach, it remains a troubled task. However, Grammy-award gospel singer Israel Houghton and Galley Molina may have found a way with their new movie “I’m In Love With A Church Girl.”
The film stars rapper Ja Rule, Adrienne Bailon, Stephen Baldwin and a host of others. All three actors, along with Houghton and Molina stopped by Christian Culture Center (CCC) in Brooklyn, N.Y. to promote the film.
Churchgoers sat silently as scenes of drugs, cash, and violence flashed across the CCC screens. Some vocalized their shock, while others silently looked astound. As the video concluded individuals seemed confused and not sure how the video will be tied into Sunday’s sermon. Once the orator introduced Houghton, Bailon, Baldwin and Ja Rule it all made sense. We were watching the trailer for “I’m In Love With A Church Girl.”
Houghton described the film in many words but particular he emphasized surrender.
“This story is about surrender……it’s about coming as you are. There is a line that is in the film that says God doesn’t want someone like me in His church and that’s just not true God wants everyone in His church.” Houghton continued, “This movie is about redemption it’s about that God is for everybody.”
Molina, who penned the script while incarcerated and based off his personal experiences, said, “This movie is about how God used a woman to help change a man. How the Lord knew that in that season of my life the only way I would walk into a Christian church is going to be by an invite from a woman…..I never walked into a Christian church so I said hallelujah, amen I’m going with you.”
Ja Rule, who was recently released from jail, described his journey while working on this particular project.
“This whole experience is having an impact on my life. When I first came to the project I did not know what to expect, what I was going to get out of it but what I think I am receiving is the love from all of these wonderful people, the love from God and it’s really touching me in a different way right now….I’ve been to church three times this month I think I’m getting somewhere,” he said as he chuckled.
Bailon, former Cheetah Girl and 3LW songbird, revealed she was raised in a Pentecostal church in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
A proud church girl and former missionette she said, “We use to have people come to our church and give these testimonies of rough lives they’ve been through but for the youth here if you was raised in church and you stuck with it the whole way I think that’s a testimony too.” Bailon continued, “For me reading the script it always felt like this was what I was meant to do and this is the smallest way that I could give back just to say thank you for all the other opportunities God has given me.”
Stephen Baldwin, who is the brother of Alec Baldwin, was also excited to be part of the film.
“When I met Galley and Galley told me that Jeff ‘Ja Rule’ Atkins had been cast in the lead role I have been waiting for a Christian filmmaker to realize and to recognize that it was important to make something that a). was going to connect with our culture in such a way that wasn’t a film just for the church….its Galley’s real story and we want to keep it as real to the people who don’t know Jesus as well as those who do know Jesus,” he said.
Today Molina is not only a pastor in California, but also the founder and CEO of Reverence Gospel Media.
